Their fishing weekend with EBROCATnCARP started 2007 off nicely for young anglers Sean Atkinson 22 and Mike Hayes 24. After that momentous suggestion ‘lets go fishing in Spain ’, often made over one too many pints at the pub, it was left up to Sean to see what he could come up with.
The words, bored and broke, in the same sentence can often mean there’s virtually nothing much the grey month of January can really offer in the UK, so fishing in Spain for them had to be cheap and very cheerful, and it most definitely was!
Sean booked a long weekend guided carp fishing, with Ebrocatncarp for him and his mate, on a fly and survive deal. They took advantage of the cheap Ryanair flights from Liverpool to Reus, which will often set you back no more than just £1.00, and we put together an all inclusive package for them, of two and a half days guided fishing, airport transfers, and quality tackle and equipment hire, including their licences. Almost cheap as chips, so all they had to do was catch the fish. And they did.
Even before they’d left the ground, there was a slight glitch, when, after a ‘ let the holiday begin’ session during the day at his local bar, on leaving for the airport, to catch a 6 o’clock flight, Mike had one of those defining moments when he couldn’t find his passport. It had actually fallen out of his pocket in the pub, but Mike was under the impression it was safe in his bag. Panic set in, when he realised that the passport must still indeed be in the pub. As you would expect, the landlord, was not exactly overjoyed to be woken at 5 a.m. by one of his regulars, off on a fishing jolly, and the lads got the distinct impression that the phrase ‘don’t ever come back’ was the more polite way of saying what he was actually thinking.
We met the lads as their flight landed at Reus airport and during their journey back to Mequinenza, they were soon getting their first glimpse of the River Ebro. After a supermarket sweep for bankside munchies and beer, they were keen to get down to serious fishing.
During the previous few days, the weather had been a bit foggy, with the sun eventually waking up about early afternoon. The water was on the chilly side, keeping the carp low in the water.
The Ebrocatncarp guides, Heiko Winter and Tom Rouse, set everything up for their arrival. The bivvy was swept and polished ready for a night under the stars, and a couple of bankside chairs were ready for a spot of chilling out. All they had to do was get to grips with the tackle, which was also waiting for them, and get ready to wet their lines.
The lines screamed off first with a nice 31lb carp on the hook, and the first personal bests were already beaten and there were smiles all round.

Personal best beaten on the first take a nice 31lb Ebro carp.
This was followed by an even bigger 35lb with smaller takes in between that got caught in some snags.

Another one at 35lb

A nice 28lb carp for the lads.
Even though they only fished for two and a half days, Sean and Mike had a nice haul of fish to 35lb including a couple of 15’s and other fish to 20lb
The weekend was over far too quickly and the lads are keen to come back for another trip later this year.

Away it goes, back into the cool water of the River Ebro at Mequinenza.
